Snore guard as seen on TV!

Tonight's Goodnight Britain program on BBC1, featured Chris , who's snoring ( and relationship) was cured using the top of the range Somnowell Snore guard. Custom-made, unobtrusive and available at Newbury Smile Studio with dental practitioner Richard Charon.

Pleasde call us on 01635 47757 for friendly advice and a consultation.

Somnowell - Anti Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Device

The Somnowell is the world’s most advanced oral appliance for treating problematic snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. The Somnowell is also used to treat Bruxism and TMJ. It is the only oral appliance that offers a truly effective and comfortable lifetime solution.

The Somnowell is made from cast Chrome Cobalt alloy, commonly used by dentists when creating the highest quality dentures, bridges, and crowns. It is impervious to the bacteria and fungi commonly found in acrylic plastic and thermoplastic Mandibular Advancement Appliances, and is suitable for long-term use in the mouth.

While comparably priced appliances will last only a fraction of the time, the Somnowell will look and feel exactly the same after decades of use.

The Somnowell gently holds your lower jaw in the ‘recovery position’ while you sleep, an ideal method for ensuring a well maintained airway. While other MMAs infringe on tongue space, causing the user discomfort, the Somnowell’s unique lower jaw connecting section gives the tongue free space to move. The Somnowell is so comfortable you won’t even notice you are wearing it. The wearer can talk freely, drink and take medication.

The design of the Somnowell takes into account the individual features of each user’s jaw joints, so the appliance can be used as a highly effective treatment for jaw pain. An added benefit of the Somnowell is that it keeps the teeth in position, and the the Somnowell Retainers are currently recommended by specialists as a permanent retainer after orthodontic work.

Each and every Somnowell appliance is designed and manufactured by specialists, and made to exacting standards, for a lifetime of good sleeps.
Please give us a call to discuss how you can start to sleep well again at night.

How to Stop Snoring

On the first visit you will meet the consultant. A medical and dental history is taken, along with details of your concerns, conditions, previous treatments undertaken and results of any past sleep studies. If necessary the consultant will perform a radiographs and body mass index calculation.

You will complete a pre-treatment Epworth Sleepiness Scale test to give a baseline record at the start of treatment.

The consultant will undertake an extra oral inspection of the face, soft tissues and jaws. Then an intra-oral examination is undertaken to include assessments of soft tissues and the teeth. A brief dental examination, periodontal assessment, dental health and mouth inspection will be undertaken.

The causes of snoring, sleep apnoea, teeth grinding, and jaw pain are discussed and explained with the help of demonstration photographs models and manikins. The range of management modalities for snoring and sleep apnoea are discussed, along with the indications, merits and limitations.

A very important announcment

Important Announcement
for
 Newbury Smile Makers Dental Practice
Newbury
Berkshire

As of last Friday afternoon, October 12th 2012, Chris and I can now announce that, 3 days after my 60th birthday and in time for our 36th wedding anniversary today,
we have sold our dental practice
It is technically my practice but given
Chris’s HUGE input over almost 23 years, it has been her baby too.

We got the news of the exchange of contracts at 10.15 am last Friday, as we drove back from a week in Glenridding in The Lake District.  We do love it there.

We met our team over drinks that evening to celebrate my BIG birthday and by the way, break the news, which did stun them but after our careful explanations, I hope left everyone reassured. 20 minutes later we introduced the new owner, Dr. Charl du Toit from the Newbury area. Completion is due about the 26th October.

I plan to stay on, all being well, for 2 years on a part-time Associate basis for 2 days a week.

The rest of my time I'll devote to carrying on with and developing my Inhalation Sedation courses and mentoring and lecturing, here and possibly abroad.

Chris's plan is to stay on until her 60th, next September, to smooth the transition with the patients and then train in her replacement. A hard act to follow I reckon in many ways.

Remember the practice is open for business as usual, its just the ownership has changed. The name is being changed to Newbury Smile Studio too.

I will take this opportunity to thank all of our patients for their loyal support, many for over 20 years, to those who have supported our dental business professionally, Chris Barrow, Simon Hocken and Mark Oborn in particular, as well as the growing social media community on Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin who have been kind enough to friend, follow and connect with us and refer patients to us as well. Thanks also to The Jack O'Newbury Chapter of BNI, some of whose members have also become patients

My RA (Inhalation Sedation) Courses and mentoring.

As I will now have some weekday availability, it will be possible to arrange tailored RA courses to be run in-house, for smaller numbers, say 3 dentists and 3 nurses, for those who cannot make Saturdays or wish the more individualized approach. These will be limited to about 6 per yea,r in addition to the 4-6 Saturday courses I will continue to run both from Newbury and from other venues in the UK and Ireland according to demand.

RA Course Practical demonstration
Running an "RA" course theory session

Lecturing at The Dentistry Show 2012

In addition it will be easier as to organize one to one mentoring for dentists, hygienists and Therapists more readily to provide competency certification.

Inhalation Sedation mentoring to Dental Therapists

A little help for my friend

About my friend Phil

I’ve known Phil Cory on and off for the best part of 20 years. Originally when used to come to my dental practice to bring his daughter, then aged about 5 or 6. She was always immaculately turned out, though Phil was, shall we say a bit more casual. but a great dad.

As a sad , occasional guitar strummer myself for many years, it didn’t take long for conversations to turn to his own first love- the guitar. Whenever we met I’d catch up on the latest gizmo or his musical directions.

I say Phil is a friend loosely but lets say a good acquaintance.

Well life moved on and Phil moved away from Newbury. In recent years Phil’s absolute committment to an alternative, green and eco-friendly existence has taken him “off-grid” to live a very simple life, engineering all his basic energy needs from solar panels, including powering his electric guitar amps from solar as well as cycle-generated electricity.

Phil still needs to get around as he writes all of his own songs and performs at a variety of events and music festivals around the country, living in his motor home/caravan. Phil is a real-life, latter-day troubadour. living his dream of a having a low-impact on the environment, low carbon foot-print and mainly performing his own heart-felt songs. They may or may not be your flavor but I admire his talent.

OK. Phil needs a little help to keep the show on the road. £11.50 gets you a limited edition, signed copy of his latest songs.  Phil designed and printed the cover all with solar power too.
Payment is via Paypal. All the details are here together with a couple of tiny tasters.
http://solarcyclestage.webs.com/apps/podcast/

Phil’s other interests are no doubt many but include using/playing Crystal Bowl’s to produce soothing and he would say, healing soundscapes.
http://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/quartz-crystal-bowls-shamanic/id545952753.

Being in the presence of these when being played is an interesting experience as the vibrations at specific musical pitches pass right through you.
Anyway, you get the idea. If you feel like supporting Phil in his quest for a greener and more eco-friendly way of living, in return for some of his music then you know what to do!

Our "One Dog and her Man" story.

In 1991, 2 years after we bought our Newbury dental practice one of our patients began to ask about details if impression materials and how they worked. She wanted an impression of a dogs paw. She didn't say why.

I told her the pros and cons of the main options and off she went with some material to have a go. Shes soon returned to ask me to do he job properly and went on to say why.

She was a relative of Harry Chapman Pincher, the author, who had written another book, this time not on his more usual topic of espionage which was to be called One Dog and her Man by Dido, his beloved chocolate labrador.  The book was written in the first person, from from the dog's point of view. You know, " I took my man for a walk" etc.

Well to keep up the marketing momentum, Dido and her man had to appear in person on the publication day at the book signing in Newbury and naturally, being the author, Dido had to sign the books, one after another.

So we had to come up with a way to achieve it. Dido duly arrived one afternoon for an appointment in our patient lounge. With much bribery from Chris, using Jaffa cakes, Dido sat still, with a well-vaselined paw in a tub of dental impression material (Impregum) until it had set and we could slurp her paw out of the tub.

Job done, we hot-footed it to kindly John Broughton, of Broughton and Tyrell dental lab, at the time one of Newbury's biggest employers.

There we made a reverse cast again using the same rubbery material and clever John Broughton dreamt up the idea of embedding a rubber stamp into the setting material so the handle protruded. After a little dental technician magic, we had a precise copy of Dido's paw in synthetic rubber with a handy handle.

Harry Chapman Pincher was delighted and used the paw with an ink pad to stamp each copy of the book sold at the public signing.

In 1993 , when Dido had had a litter, he wrote a sequel book called A Box of Chocolates. As a thank you to Chris and me for the work we had done creating Dido's rubber paw, he gave over two and half pages of the new book to the episode at our practice with full credits to us both and the practice. Shame facebook and Twitter hadn't been invented then. Looks as though the book is no longer in print but if you are a real doggy person you can find it on e-bay

We received a framed plaster cast copy of the paw, painted in her chocolate livery as a momento.

The end.

Testimonial from a very happy and grateful patient.

Today the practice team received the following testimonial from a very happy and grateful patient. It makes us proud of the service we provide and the work we do. It was a real team effort. I have witheld her name for confidentiality reasons.

Here is is unedited.

" Hi Richard and Chris,

My apologies for taking so long to write this. This house-moving stuff sucks time. I'm steeped in boxes and bubble-wrap!

I came to you as a timid, Registered Dental Surgery Assistant........with problems that threatened my entire future.I won't go into the details of the problems I had, as you are well aware of them and the impact they had on my life.

I shall, rather, talk about them in a roundabout way.

My first experience of meeting Richard was pretty traumatic, he had to tell me some things that I'd been hiding from, therefore I finally had to face them. How that man managed to do this and leave me with a *hope*, I am still unsure of. But he did exactly that.

Richard fixed the short term problem, delivered the long-term problem while instilling a security that he could make life better. Wow!  Not a small thing at all!   Did I believe him? Well, yes and no.  I WANTED to believe him but having a dental background, I saw only options that I dreaded. He still continued to deliver a *hope*. He gave me a smile, despite the odds, he did that.

This is a mundane story, but it's an AMAZING story.

I went from a woman who was so afraid of the options, and of treatment, that I had my 80yr old father take me to appointments!.......to a woman that actually looked forward to being in the dental chair!!

I enjoyed the experience of RA sedation, I enjoyed the calm experience of a Dentist that knew exactly what he was doing and the experience of an incredibly sensitive Dental Nurse called Gosia who delivered a calming touch JUST at the very moment it was needed.

From the moment I met Chris and her confidence building approach, to walking out with my new life and my new smile, I have been thankful.

My life has changed so much over the last year due to Richard and his team, that I must share the things that wouldn't have happened without it.

I am the winner of the Basingstoke Music and Arts Festival, Literary section. I was brave enough to attend and receive the Shield and Cup! Yes, ME!! My work will be in an exhibition in the Whitchurch Silk Mill during June. I am invited to take part in other literary festivals.  This is entirely due to Richard's work. I  take a full part in a musical life with my banjo, and I no longer hover in the shadows. I worry more about my hair than I do about my teeth!

How great is that!

Most importantly........ I smile , I take part, I LIVE....and a very different life to the one I did before. The people around me are struck by my confidence after watching such a shy, retiring person for so long.

I once told Richard that I looked forward to going to the dentist now. Well, this is true. Of course I'll never look forward to dental treatment but I DO look forward to resting in Richard and his team's hands. There is nothing to be afraid of these days.

I now need no sedation. I have full confidence in Richard and what he prescribes. I also can rest easily knowing that should I need RA for any *wobbly* moments, it's there, professionally administered.

I consider myself incredibly fortunate that I stumbled across Richard Charon in my darkest moment.  I'll always be glad that I picked up the phone and spoke to Chris. Life has never been brighter.

Thank you all, so very much.

With the kindest regards,

J.S. "

When dental problems can ruin life's chances

When dental problems can ruin life's chances

Does fear of the dentist or the possible cost of treatment keep you from taking proper care of your dental health?

National Smile Month, which began on May 20th, is organised by the British Dental Health Foundation, a charity set up to raise awareness of the importance of dental care, especially prevention (being better than cure).

From the misery of toothache to the embarrassment of missing teeth, bad breathe or a snaggle-tooth smile, avoiding dental visits is not always a smart idea. Worse still if a niggly problem is left and then gets really bad on Christmas Eve or as you leave to get away on your hard-earned holiday.

Even worse, imagine an event that you have been building up to for months or even years;
Your wedding or what might be the pinnacle of your life's achievements, as might have happened to this Olympic athlete. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/athletics/9494272.stm

How sad or foolish it would be if a preventable dental problem stopped her talking part in an Olympic event or final ! A double disaster.

Perhaps you a not an Olympic participant but we all have important landmark events in our lives. Exams, interviews, gap-year travelling, long saved-for holidays, weddings, important anniversaries, graduation ceremonies,  charity runs. The list goes on.

Don't wait until its too late. Call us to talk about the issues which keep you away from the dentist.......

This is a free consultation we offer at 5.15pm

"Snaggle Teeth" to Lovely Smile with Invisalign®

Revolutionary Smile Creation or Enhancement
  Naturally

This young lady came to see us about 9 months ago, unhappy with her crossed
and protruding upper front teeth.

Here is a close up of the snaggle teeth

Avoiding crowns or the inappropriate use of veneers, the hi-tech Invisalign® process accurately and gently manoevered her own natural teeth, bit by bit, into their new position.

All achieved Without train track braces, wires or brackets.

Here is her last clear Aligner in place.
In fact the last of 19 that she needed to achieve her great new smile.

Yes she is wearing braces!!
The tough resin Aligners are worn day and night but removed to eat, drink and clean teeth and can be removed for occasional social engagements if desired.

The final smile and a very happy patient

These images are being shown with her permission.
If you have been impressed with this lovely result and want to know more, we will be holding a demonstration evening in Newbury soon.

To book your place and for more details please e-mail

We have our new dental nurse.

Following our interview process, we are happy to say we have now appointed a new trainee dental nurse. She has about 12 months experience but there is still much for her to learn as we provide more advanced and a wider range of dental care than she is used to but we are confident she will come on quickly with us.

Our latest testimonial

This testimonial arrived in March 2012. It has been a real privilege looking after Sean.

" I'm sorry to say that the time has come for me to find a dentist closer to home. Now I am living in Yorkshire and running my own company, it is just too difficult to make time to travel down (and justify the fuel cost in doing so!).

I want to say a big thank you to you both for looking after my teeth for the last 20 plus years. I can only hope my new dentist is half as good as you Richard...

I would like to wish you all the very best for the future, both professionally and personally.

Kindest regards

Sean Hulm"
